High School Cultural Camp at Yarramundi

At the end of Term 3, we visited Uncle Lex on the Cultural Camp at Yarramundi. We were welcomed in the oldest of ways, with the wonder of blowing white ochre onto smooth, cool gums. We were told important stories standing next to ancient carvings. We sat, still and quiet amongst the xanthorrhoea’s, lomandras and stringy bark trees. Uncle Wayne calmly led us through a star-lit, campfire discussion around mental health and the ways in which we can ‘be present’ and support each other, should the need arise. We made stone tools, carved wood sticks, wove grass strands and weeded a space where dancers dance. By the river, we lay on the huge, fallen river pines watching stones as they skimmed across the wide Nepean. Thank you, Uncle Lex, for welcoming us into the wild, ancient space of Yarramundi.
